The moon was high in the sky when the camp came into view, and Blackest Shadow of the Night heaved a soft sigh, relieved by the sight. It had been another long, hard day in the mountains—as they all were now—and he was keen to step poor into his home…even though he knew he would not be there for long. Prey was painfully scarce, after all, and that meant that every moment counted: that he must pile as many as he could into the hunt.
His meagre catch merely proved the point.
He had set out long before dawn—had, in truth, hardly even stopped the day before—and yet he might just as well have been out only an hour for what little he had to show. His search had taken him to the very outskirts of the tribe’s territory, where fewer cats were inclined to go, and he’d scoured the land from high to low. The result was a bedraggled bird and a scrawny mouse of skin and bone – and matters were so dire that they had seemed, at first, a lucky catch. But they were not. They fell far short from what his family and tribe required…but try as he might they were about the best he could provide.
If the problem persisted much longer, he might have to start hunting beyond the border.
But not tonight. Tonight he would try closed to camp—just in case—and then snatch a whisker’s sleep in preparation for the new day. It was a routine he had been following for weeks or moons now—he wasn’t sure; it was all the same—and it was that same routine that now guided his paws towards the tribe’s cave. Meagre or not, he did have food to give, and so he headed the nursery’s way – hardly even aware that he did. Black’s paws were going more or less where they would, following their own familiar trail: letting his tired mind drift, temporarily, away.

Thunder Cloud Thunder Cloud sighed, a hard line set on his maw rather than his normal grin, which was quite the rare site for the tabby. If life had been normal, or at least somewhat better than this, the male would be found guarding the hunters as they began their search for prey. But that night, with the harsh wind and bitter cold, he decided to use his limited hunting skills. So far, he had seen no source of prey and, as a result, could not see if he remembered his small amount of training. He eventually decided it would be a smart idea that he needed to move further away from camp and go towards the borders. Perhaps there, the barely-alive mice and birds and rabbits would be hidden among the snow.
He would be leaving soon, but he still needed to provide for the Tribe.
The moon was high above him, providing limited light. The tom stayed quiet despite his large body size. Because of the lack of food he possessed, the tom looked rather strange. Having a large body but no meat to go with it made his skin and fur hang. But when he thought about it, no one could judge him due to looking a similar way.
His yellow eyes glanced up away from the path in front of him, hoping to spot a silhouette of something he could catch. However, he instead saw a shadow of a cat. Thunder Cloud was unable to smell the cat from where he was and, being the reckless tom he was, called out, "Who's there?" He let his claws show, preparing for the worst.

With his mind no longer occupied by the hunt, and the certainty that he was safe, it was easy for his thoughts to drift away. The present situation was not a pleasant one to dwell on, however heavily it hung upon the tribe, and so, as was often the case now, his mind turned to earlier, easier, and above all brighter times. The cave was very much in sight, and yet as his paws carried him towards its embrace he was seeing, not its waiting opening, but the memory playing out before his eyes. He was still observing a leaf-bare night, but it was overlaid by a soft fall of phantom snow—and he was not alone. A brother pranced in front of him, delighted by the snowfall and the prize he bore, and somewhere beside him a rumbled laugh echoed from a second remembered form. It was a moment from seasons earlier, and Black half-smiled as it rolled across him; as he savoured the recalled joy—
And pausing as his ears flickered, alerting him to some half-heard sound and returning him to the present once more.
For a moment, he wondered if it were prey, and he stood still as the rocks around him as he strained to hear more. But it was nothing so small—he needed only a few short moments to discern that—so with a muffled sigh he pressed on once more. The noise had come from nearer the cave—almost certainly a cat—so though he was vaguely surprised to find another heading out so late he was, at least, prepared for their appearance – their sudden call. Only when he caught their words and their tone did he stop once more, recognising the challenge they bore.
He had been seen, but not recognised. Black hesitated a moment at that, aware how quickly such matters could turn…and needing a moment to place the voice besides. His distance from the tribe made it difficult, at times, to draw the right names from his mind—especially now, with everyone underfed: no one looking themselves—and for a brief uneasy stretch he had to let the silence reside. Then, thankfully, something fell into its rightful place, and a murmured “…Thunder Cloud,” made its escape around the prey in his jaws.
Just saying the name merely solidified the cat’s identity in his mind—not that he could profess to know the tom.
“You can relax,” he spoke quietly – and not just because of the precious scrawny burden he bore. He had no desire to wake their tribe-mates nor to antagonise the cat before him, and so his voice came low and soft: unconsciously soothing as he took a few steps forwards through the snow. “I’m no threat.”

(Sorry for no table, it's helping me write rn without it)
Thunder Cloud made himself look as large as possible, puffing out his chest along with his fur and standing as tall as he could. He appeared confident and in control, but in reality fear was running through his mind. If this cat was a trespasser, there was a likely chance he would be defeated in combat. He was still skinny and food-deprived, just like everyone else, no matter how much he pretended things were different. If he died tonight, at least he would die with honor. Or maybe he was being a tad over dramatic.
The other cat halted at the sound of his words. That was good, right? That would mean he would begin running away now... or not. No, indeed not. The cat was still standing while facing him, but the red tabby stood firmly and with an intense glare in his yellow eyes. By expecting the worse out the situation, it would make Thunder Cloud stronger. That was something his father had taught him.
"Thunder Cloud..."
The cat was quiet and only due to the desolate surroundings they were in was he able to hear him. The cat's voice was soothing and almost familiar... He was told to relax, and he did. The cat came closer to him, and soon he was able to recognize those bright blue eyes. "Blackest Shadow of the Night," he said, more so to himself than to the other. "I'm sorry, I couldn't see you very well. I didn't mean to interrupt your-" He glanced at the piece of prey in the other's mouth, "Hunting. I came to do the same thing, but don't seem to have quite as much skill as you." He smiled a genuine smile, something he always tried to do.

To his silent relief, his quiet words proved enough to diffuse the situation, calming the other tom at once. It was as well, really, for he’d not missed how his counterpart had been holding himself: was half-certain that it would have taken a relatively small push to make the cat lash out with tooth and claw. Thunder Cloud was—if he remembered rightly—a fighter, after all, and over-guardedness at night was not out of the norm.
But it didn’t come to that, and Black relaxed as he saw the tension leave his counterpart’s form; as his sharp ears caught the words that followed on. It was no more than his own name, at first, but the recognition was enough to tell him that there was no need to worry a moment more. He padded still nearer at that, drawing within comfortable distance for quiet talk – and uttering a simple “no need for apology. I blend well with the dark.” as he paused once more.
The snows of leafbare were not kind to black cats…but the nights of every season were.
‘I came to do the same thing, but don’t seem to have quite as much skill as you.’
It was a simple phrase, but all the same it drew out a brief and startled huff of amusement: then a rebuttal of that very same claim. “These were luck, mostly—and I’m headed back to the cave."
Ooc: No need to apologise for that! I'm honestly more accustomed to posts without fancy tables than those with them anyway.

(Well in that case, I'll stick without em!)
Thunder Cloud noticed Black slightly relax. Had he been on edge, too? Perhaps not. From Thunder Cloud's perspective, Blackest Shadow of the Night always seemed to be calm, cool, and collected. Those were traits that he could certainly respect, as he was rather loud and obnoxious and confused the majority of the time. Although, he was cool too, right?
When his tribemate simply replied that there was no need for apology, the tabby's smile grew slightly. He was relieved to hear that the other wasn't angry with him. Everything about, well, anything really was tense these days. The atmosphere the two resided in was cold and unforgiving, but without the sound of other cats and prey, it was rather peaceful. So being out in the territory appeared to make him more relaxed. A change from the norm was welcomed.
When Black swatted away his compliment, the tom frowned in good humor and insisted, "No, no, no. You're far too modest! That's a good catch for there to be little to no prey here, walking in the chilly snow, and it being night." A smile covered his maw once more and his tale flicked to show his not-so-subtle happiness.
"—and I’m headed back to the cave."
Again, a frown took control. Though, this time it was actually out of disappointment. His emotions were changing rather quickly. If they went back to the cave already, they would be able to smell the hunger that had infested all of them. He sighed, but then asked, "Can I accompany you, at least? It's smarter to stick together out here, wouldn't you say?"

His dismissal of the tom’s apology brought quite the change, and Black tilted his head—just a little—as he spied that same shift. Only a moment before Thunder Cloud had seemed to be teetering on the brink of aggression, but now he was as cheerful and bright as could be, and only growing brighter. Black wasn’t too sure how to respond to that—he’d perhaps grown a little rusty at such interaction—so he kept quiet until a false frown spread across his counterpart’s face.
The red tom’s words stirred him immediately, then, and he shifted a little awkwardly as a second, more insistent compliment was thrown his way. There were any number of good hunters in the clan, and his catches had played heavy reliance on luck – and he couldn’t quite help but let a “you’re kind of just proving my point,” fall as Thunder Cloud’s praise found its end. It was true that he’d searched long and hard to find the right place, but ultimately it had been chance that had let him route his two catches from the otherwise empty snow-bound wastes. He could just as easily have chosen the wrong spot, after all – or been there too early or late.
He didn’t get much change to elaborate on those same points, however. His counterpart had already focused in on his other words, and suddenly he found himself faced with a genuine frown; another shift from the attitude held mere heartbeats before. Thunder Cloud was apparently as changeable as the weather—rather apt, given his name—and Black was quieted by the shift – and the question that came so quickly in its wake. For a moment he hesitated, their proximity to the camp making company seem unnecessary, and the question itself seeming a little unusual, to him, besides. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d travelled with anyone other than his siblings or his one-time mentor, and he’d largely been avoiding the company of non-kin for moons. It was simply easier. Let him avoid more awkward situations.
But at the same time it was a reasonable request, and Black couldn’t see any true harm in accepting it, even if the company of others had grown, for the most part, uncomfortable. It was for that reason that he finally gave a shallow nod to the other tom, backing it with a simple “I suppose.”
Ooc: Sounds good!

Thunder Cloud, when Black mumbled that he had proved his point, he decided to smile rather than be upset about it. Everyone was upset, and it wasn't doing anything to help. "Yeah, I guess I did..." He mumbled to himself embarrassingly, chuckling lightly as he glanced away. Things were taking a turn and he wanted to change it. He looked back at the other tom after a moment, waiting to see how he'd reply to his request.
His answer provoked a time of thought for Blackest Shadow of the Night. The red tabby had asked the question in hopes they would be able to talk for a bit longer. In truth, now that he had found a companion, he didn't want to go back to being lonely again for the night. But 'wants' have been out of the question for a long time. Instead, 'needs' had been the focus of the Tribe. So, if Black needed to not talk to him, then that was that. Finally, Black answered, and his smile didn't change.
"Great!" With that, the hyper tom lead the way to the cave. It was a short distance to home, but maybe it would allow him to know his new friend a bit better. "Once we get there, I guess I'll go back out and try to hunt. It's times like these where I wish I didn't train as a Guard, you know? I could be a bit more useful, a bit more needed. Ah, well, I guess what's done is done. Just gotta move on from it, keep trying. Just gotta keep being better. " He didn't look to see if Black was following him, instead assuming he could hear him. Thunder Cloud continued "Well, that's enough about me, right? What about you? Ever wish you did something different than you're doing now?"
Ah, Thunder Cloud. Always oblivious.

Changeable as the weather indeed. To Black’s surprise, Thunder Cloud’s apparent disappointment dissolved as soon as he gave his answer—perhaps even before that—and his acceptance was greeted was a short over-eager cry. It half-startled the tom, being so loud in the quiet night—so unexpected, too—and he was momentarily glad that his counterpart had already turned away from his form. That movement—his slightly premature start for the cave—masked Black’s own jump from his view, and thus allowed him to save a little face.
This encounter was awkward enough without him embarrassing himself. Blackest Shadow of the Night simply wasn’t used to the company of his tribe-mates, and he was glad for the brief space his counterpart’s quick start happened to toss his way. It gave him a moment to collect himself—partially adjust to the change—and when he finally stirred his own paws he was perhaps a little readier to deal with his energetic companion’s frame. Perhaps.
Or perhaps not. In truth he wasn’t entirely sure, and he quickly began to feel a little…overwhelmed as the other tom’s chatter spilled across the previously silent night. It made quite the difference from what had become his norm, but since Black had no mind to interject and there wasn’t room for response it was relatively easy simply to let him talk. It wasn’t as if there was any harm in it, over-eager though it was—and he had to admit that it was technically good to see some lingering cheer within their darkened world—
‘—something different than you’re doing now?’
“…Ah—” Black wrinkled his nose at his own pathetic response; cast within his mind for the rest of the talk: the start of the question Thunder Cloud had launched. He was ashamed to realise that he’d partially lost track of what the other cat had been saying, and that left him trying to formulate an answer from fragmented talk.
“…No. I don’t think so.”

Thunder Cloud looked back at Blackest Shadow of the Night and gave a small chuckle, tilting his head in question. "Really? I think if I could, I'd want to do anything and everything. No restrictions. Figure out what I really like. Maybe I'm super good at healing others but just don't know because I never had the chance to try it. Eh, that's doubtful actually. Although, I think you're really good at what you do, so it makes sense that you wouldn't want to change anything." The two toms were nearing the cave now, it's opening towering above the two in a way that seemed threatening in the dark. Although, the red tabby had seen this same image countless times over his life and was no longer afraid of its looming jaws. When he was a trainee, it used to scare him a tad, but he always hid it after his father scolded him.
Thunder Cloud lowered his voice, which was unusual for him but considerate given the circumstances. "Oh, hey, you weren't at the meeting with Stoneteller today, were you?" He couldn't recall seeing the other tom during the gathering, and he had looked at everyone. Not in a creepy way. Just in an observant way. Yeah.
He stopped, wanting to talk to Black face to face. If he had to explain everything to him (unless someone had already told him about Stoneteller's decision), he really wanted to see his reaction.

His response was a little lame, built as it was on only fragments of his counterpart’s chatter, but it seemed to do the job. Thunder Cloud appeared to be satisfied by it, at least, and he was soon chattering on as cheerfully as before: oblivious to Black’s momentary confusion and pause. There was something to be thankful for, in that, and Black was indeed thankful – not to mention much more attentive to these newest words. He might have gotten away with his lack of attention before, but he doubted he’d be so a second time…and he’d no wish to be so rude.
Thankfully, it wasn’t exactly uninteresting talk: merely of a volume greater than the norm. That small fact—the interest of it—made it a little easier for him to track the words the flowed around his form, and as he listened to the cascade he began to piece together what he had missed before. He would never know the full picture, of course, but at least he could have a better idea of what it was Thunder Cloud talked.
“There’s a certain logic to that,” he interjected quietly, a little unsure whether the response would even be heard: uncertain, too, whether it mattered at all. At least he was making an attempt, right? And he had to admit that there was some sense in what the tom said, for most cats were indeed limited to one or other world; never given a true chance to try their paw elsewhere. It was almost sad, in a way, to think that some of their tribe might have left their full potential undiscovered simply through choosing the wrong course.
“I am not sure I would want to be a guard, noble though the job is—”
His words were more self-directed musing than anything else, but they petered off as Thunder Cloud turned abruptly to face him, forcing him to still his paws. That movement and the tom’s question quickly distracted from his own thoughts, and for a moment he was quiet once more, head quirked at the puzzle of this newest change. But there was really only one answer to give, and he soon spoke up anew, a trace of bewilderment in his voice. “There was a meeting?”

Thunder Cloud internally patted himself on the back when he noticed Blackest Shadow of the Night beginning to speak more with him. More so, the other tom had even agreed with him. Things were looking up, and such a small action had managed to make the red tabby feel like he was on top of the world. He was, however, starting to notice that Black seemed a tad uncomfortable with him, but surely it was just his imagination? Even so, he silently reminded himself that the next time he were to have a conversation with him, he'd go a bit easier on him.
“I am not sure I would want to be a guard, noble though the job is—”
That was something Thunder Cloud could understand easily. Being a Guard made him feel like he was constantly on edge, waiting for something to come out of the shadows and attack being his consistent thought process. The tom didn't reply, however, because there was much more important things to talk about.
Now that the two were standing face-to-face, the red tabby held back a chuckle at Black's oblivious response to there being a meeting. It reminded him of himself. But, he took a deep breath, and tried to tell everything in order. "Right, there was a meeting. Stoneteller gathered us all around, and she made a big announcement. Basically, she said some of us need to leave the Tribe to start a new life. That way those that stay in the Tribe will have more food and those of us who leave will have more opportunities to find prey." He said this with a casual tone, completely under-rating such devastating news.
Thunder Cloud eyed Black with curiosity, wondering what his response would be. He remembered at the meeting everyone was either upset or confused, and he was the only one excited. What would Black's response be?

It was, he knew in his heart, a stupid question. Thunder Cloud had already given him the answer in the moments before, and Black felt a flicker of embarrassment wash through him as he heard his own words: saw the amusement curling within the other’s form. He should have asked anything but that, under the circumstances – but it had been a long day and he was perhaps a tad low on sleep, so perhaps momentary stupidity could be ignored. Perhaps the mere fact that he’d been out hunting since before dawn would earn him just a little leeway, for there was no way he could have heard…
It seemed that his counterpart took that into account – or at least acknowledged some smaller fraction of it. At any rate Thunder Cloud refrained from the mockery he might have expected, instead diving right into a string of facts more than capable of filling the gaping holes. And this time Blackest Shadow of the Night listened more intently than he had at any moment before, for he knew that a Stone Teller meeting was important: that no details could rightfully be missed or ignored. Lucky for him, he supposed, that he had encountered someone equipped with the facts: ready to give them in plainest form.
Not that it entirely helped. Although the other tom did nothing to embellish or emphasise his account, Black couldn’t help but let a stunned “leave?” drop from his maw; was keenly aware that the mere suggestion shocked him to the core. He sounded like a kit, the way he was repeating things, but for a moment it was impossible to fit the idea into his world: for a moment he could only stare blankly at the other tom’s form. The tribe had lived here for longer than anyone could remember, so the mere notion that some might leave…
He hesitated, ears falling back as his thoughts collided with some dim inner voice: as a part of the relayed reasoning dug in its claws.
More prey…
His mind swayed towards their barren territory; towards his family; towards the tiny brother he had already lost…
